Steve Holland, owner of Fresh and Tasty Microgreens, proudly cut the ribbon to launch the pioneering initiative collaboration between Horticulture Wales, Avatar Fitness, and the OpTIC Technology Centre at Wrexham University. This innovative project introduces smart vending fridges stocked with nutrient-rich microgreens, available free of charge to visitors at the Mold-based fitness hub and the Wrexham University campus in St Asaph.
The initiative, part of a broader effort to promote healthy living and support local agriculture, allows participants to conveniently access fresh, locally grown microgreens, which are widely recognised for their high nutritional value. By integrating these smart fridges into high-traffic areas like Avatar Fitness and the OpTIC Technology Centre, the project aims to encourage healthier eating habits and make nutritious choices more accessible.
"We're thrilled to be part of this groundbreaking collaboration alongside our friends at Ty Isa Farm," said Steve Holland, owner of Fresh and Tasty Microgreens. "Our missions have always been to provide the freshest, healthiest produce to our community, and this initiative takes that a step further by making microgreens available to everyone in a way that's convenient and engaging."
The microgreens stocked in the fridges are cultivated at Wrexham University’s Northop Campus by Horticulture Wales, ensuring the highest quality and freshness. The goal is not only to provide free, healthy options but also to raise awareness of the benefits of microgreens and support the local farming community within Flintshire and Denbighshire.
Debbie Davies, Business and Innovation Centre Manager at the OpTIC Technology Centre, expressed her enthusiasm for the project: "We’re excited about the prospect of empowering our visitors to make healthier choices. Supporting our local growers is a priority for us, and we’re hopeful about the positive impact this initiative will have on our community."
As part of the project, Horticulture Wales will be gathering insights from participants through short surveys. This data will help understand preferences and habits regarding locally sourced produce, further aiding local growers and refining future initiatives.
The potential success of this venture could lead to the expansion of similar projects, involving more local growers and increasing the availability of fresh, healthy produce across the region.
